Safer Internet Day 2026: Empowering Youth as Stakeholders

Safer Internet Day 2026 brings together diverse stakeholders—students, parents, educators, policymakers and tech industry leaders—for a dynamic summit to discuss internet safety issues and policies. The event will focus on empowering youth by including their voices in critical conversations about online safety, digital wellbeing and the ethical use of technology. Attendees will collaborate on pressing topics such as social media regulation, school phone policies, free speech, and generative AI. A discussion guide is here.

This multi-stakeholder event will emphasize actionable solutions and foster an environment where young people are not just participants but essential stakeholders in shaping a better online world.

Safer Internet Day – Sacramento is hosted by ConnectSafely in partnership with National PTA and Children Now.

10:10 Ice Breaker Activity: Scam OPPs

A lively activity led by ConnectSafely education director Kerry Gallagher.

10:25 In Conversation With Rebecca Bauer-Kahan

A candid conversation with California Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, moderated by Ava Smithing, Advocacy Director at Young People’s Alliance.

10:45 Panel: How to Make Informed Policy

This panel brings together policymakers, researchers and technology leaders to discuss what goes into smart, effective policy: using evidence, listening to stakeholders, anticipating unintended consequences and turning good ideas into real-world impact.

11:30 Breakout Session 1: Brainstorming Solutions

Small groups of students, parents, educators, policymakers and tech leaders dig into the latest research on youth internet use and online safety—what feels true to their own experiences and what is surprising. Participants then strategize how to clearly and responsibly communicate these insights to the public.

12:00 Lunch

12:45 Panel: Youth and AI Leaders Shaping the Future Together

This panel brings together young people and leaders from government and the technology sector to explore how generative AI is shaping their lives—and to respond directly to what youth are asking for and what they are concerned about.

1:30 Breakout Session 2: Refining Solutions

Participants discuss how policymakers and legislators can act on the research, identifying key takeaways and recommendations. Groups will focus on which youth perspectives should be considered alongside the data to inform more effective, youth-centered policy decisions.

2:00 Where We Go From Here

The day will conclude with a set of recommendations from the Working Groups designed to inform activism, legislation, and technology company policies. These insights will be compiled into a report and shared with industry leaders, lawmakers, educators, parents and young people.
